Hamilton Leithauser: "This Side of the Island" (Lipps Service Live! at The Bitter End)

“This is about a lot of family and friends that I lost the last couple of years,” says Hamilton Leithauser (The Walkmen) from the stage at The Bitter End.

“This is from my new record...This song ended up being one I'm pretty proud of...It's the title track of the record. It's called ‘This Side of the Island.’

And I don't mean to get too heavy because it's really boring when someone you don't know gets on stage and gets really heavy. It's like f*** you!

(laughs)

But I just wanted you to know where it came from...I actually had to write this kind of stuff because I was going through some...tough times. And I thought that the world was kind of going to shit at the same time. But I did feel like I ended up with a hopeful message and I wanted to write a song with an uplifting end.

The ending of the song is 'I just want you to love me the way I love you.' Which is just something simple and it's kind of cliche to say, but it's like something you can stand behind when things are looking a little bit tough."

- Hamilton Leithauser on the title track from his new solo record performed at The Bitter End for Lipps Service Live! with Anna Stumpf on piano.
